Spa Leak Detection & Repair

Expert Solutions for Tricky Spa Leaks

Leaks are one of the most frustrating, and potentially costly, issues a hot tub owner can face. Due to the way most hot tubs are insulated with spray foam, water from a leak doesn’t always appear where the actual problem is. In fact, it’s common for water to travel through the foam and show up on the opposite side of the tub, making leak detection a complicated and time-consuming process.

At The Spa Guys, we specialize in advanced leak detection for hot tubs and spas of all types. Whether your spa is leaking slowly over time or you’ve discovered standing water nearby, it’s critical to act fast to avoid further damage.

Is It Time for Leak Detection?

Because leak detection can be a time-consuming and costly process, we typically recommend waiting until your hot tub is losing more than 4 inches of water per week before scheduling service. Minor leaks often aren’t worth the repair costs compared to simply topping off the water.

If you suspect a leak, we encourage you to track how much water you’re adding and how frequently. In many cases, the cost of regularly refilling your spa is still lower than the price of locating and repairing a small leak.

Let us know if you’re seeing consistent water loss beyond that threshold, we’re happy to assess the situation and help you determine whether leak detection is the right step.

Why Leak Detection Is So Challenging

Most modern hot tubs are tightly insulated with expanding spray foam. While this improves energy efficiency, it makes finding leaks much harder. Water from a cracked pipe, fitting, or jet doesn’t just drip down, it follows the path of least resistance through the foam, often surfacing far from the actual source.

This means locating the leak requires patience, experience, and often, partial foam removal. Adding to the complexity, correcting one leak doesn’t always solve the entire problem. Once the system dries, additional hidden leaks may become visible only after the first repair has been made.

Important Considerations
  • Hidden Leaks: Leaks may not be immediately apparent and can manifest in different areas due to the spa’s insulation.

  • Multiple Leaks: Finding one leak does not guarantee there are no others; additional leaks may become evident over time.

  • Time-Consuming Process: Leak detection can be labor-intensive and may require multiple hours to accurately locate and repair all issues.

Our Leak Detection Process

Wondering what’s apart of the leak detection? Here’s some of our process.

  1. Initial Assessment: Conduct a thorough inspection of the spa to identify visible signs of leaks.

  2. Pressure Testing: Perform pressure tests on the plumbing system to detect any drop in pressure, indicating a leak.

  3. Dye Testing: Introduce a non-toxic dye into the system to trace the path of the water and pinpoint the leak’s location.

  4. Foam Removal: In cases where insulation (like spray foam) obscures pipes, carefully remove sections to access and inspect the plumbing.

Cost:

  • Basic Leak Detection: $350 for the first hour of diagnostic testing.

  • Additional Time: $200 per hour in 1-hour increments, if further investigation is required.

Please note that this fee does not include the cost of repairs. Once we locate the leak, we’ll provide an estimate for the necessary fix, which may include replacing jets, plumbing fittings, or pump components. See the Spa Repair Page for pricing of parts and plumbing.

Additional service fees may apply based on spa location, accessibility, or obstructions like decking or enclosures.

Common Causes of Hot Tub Leaks

While leaks can develop in several parts of the system, the most frequent culprits include:

  • Worn or loose pump seals

  • Cracked PVC plumbing from freeze damage

  • Broken jet housings

  • Leaking heater unions or gaskets

  • Aging manifolds and glue joints

Understanding these common failure points can help you save for potential costly repairs and the leak detection service as soon as your tub starts to leak.
